We are Tech North

Vacancy: Research Manager

Tech North (part of Tech City UK) is a government-backed initiative aimed at accelerating the growth of the digital business sector in the North of England. Since launching in 2015, the team has already launched Northern Stars, Founders Network, the Digital Powerhouse Report and Career Hacker. We do this by focusing on five areas:

1. Raise the profile of the Northern Tech sector and the companies within it by uniting the regions to tell one great story

2. Create the central point of data on Northern Tech to support our initiatives around funding and skills

3. Support the creation of a leading ecosystem for founders and entrepreneurs through access to funding, networking, training and support for accelerators and co-working spaces.

4. Reduce the skills and talent gap in digital and tech by collaborating with tech employers both large and small

5. Assure the sustainability of Tech North and its initiatives by making sure we secure funding for beyond 2018

The culture is one of a start up with a lean mentality. We aim to be agile, transformative and authentic in our day-to-day operations.

The challenge of the role

Tech North covers the seven Northern tech clusters of Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Hull, Sunderland and Newcastle and all the space in between – 14,400 square miles in total. A lot happens in the tech and digital sector in this patch, meaning we have a lot of stories to tell, and a lot of information to convey.

As an experienced research manager, you’ll work with the wider content team to source that data and information and convey it through reports, infographics, articles and other formats.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Managing the creation of a master data set that fuels a new stream of research and data-led content, providing valuable information and stories, generating PR and raising the profile of the sector and the companies within it
  • Assisting the Head of Content in the production of a Tech North 100 League Table and other research projects
  • Producing the necessary data and assets for quarterly indices and reports for use in PR and editorial activity
  • Managing the gathering and formatting of data for a new online map/directory of the Northern tech ecosystem
  • Working with third-party research firms on projects and reports
  • Building a comprehensive source of data and stats for use in general content and comms activity, including presentations, editorial features, infographics and other content projects
  • Working closely with colleagues at Tech North to decide which research areas we should focus on
  • Conducting surveys that seek to answer key research questions of interest to our stakeholders
  • Benchmarking, analysing and reporting on performance against targets

Desired skills and experience

  • You have at least three years’ experience working in a research and data-related field
  • You have experience handling and analysing large data sets
  • You have experience handling data for the purpose of publication in reports, editorial and marketing activity, having worked with journalists and writers who turn the data into stories
  • You understand the tech, digital and startup business sectors
  • You are a highly-motivated self-starter, able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience benchmarking, analysing and reporting on performance against targets
  • You are passionate about the North and its future
