You may have noticed that one of our ten Northern Stars winners, Nivo , began as the first intrapreneurial spin out from Barclays bank. Obviously, the competition was judged independently by our amazing judging panel, and the sponsors for the event had no influence on the final result. However, this winning spin-out shows one of the many ways that the bank is moving into the tech space.
“Barclays have been proud to sponsor this year’s Northern Stars Final, which was a fantastic showcase of the best tech startups in the region. The pitches from all of the finalists were of an excellent standard and it was fantastic to see the level of applications from all over the North, which was a key factor in us supporting the event,” said a representative from Barclays.
“Barclays are absolutely committed to supporting the Tech and wider High Growth Ecosytem in the North through our network of specialist Managers in Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle, who have dedicated portfolios and are experts in helping companies scale.”
What are Barclays doing for the tech community?
There are currently 13 Barclays Eagle Labs across the UK, that share the collective mission of nurturing ideas and the growth of the tech sector across the country.
The aim of Eagle Labs is to be resource for the local community to foster ideas and grow not only digital skills, but digital businesses in the UK. The Labs themselves are available to anyone who wants to use them, as an events or co-working space. Within the space, people can also have access to mentors and rapid prototyping facilities.
Barclays also run their own internal programmes and accelerators , such as the one which inspired Nivo, to help startups scale and grow.
“We are really looking forward to hearing further details from the Winners on their growth plans, introducing them to our Scale Up programme and offering a warm welcome at our Eagle Labs in Liverpool and Manchester.” said a Barclays representative.
