In this series, we’ll meet the winners of Northern Stars 2017. What makes 10 of the best startups from across the North of England tick? Let’s find out…
This time, we meet Steven Berger, Managing Director of Membr.
What’s your company’s elevator pitch?
Our founder, Jack Malin, noticed three key problems in the fitness market. Firstly, only 4% of gym members are benefiting from personal training with a fitness professional. Secondly, wearable technologies aren’t integrated to gym equipment, or are only integrated to a limited extent. Thirdly, personal trainers aren’t using any proper software to manage their clients. Our software aims to solve all of these issues.
How did the company get started?
After sourcing a product designer and product developers, we assembled a round of friend and family equity financing. The company then started selling its first product in the budget health club sector.
What are you looking to get out of Northern Stars?
We want to raise our profile and gain exposure for our great company.
What’s your biggest business challenge?
It’s being able to manage the growth and demand that we’ve had alongside all the other issues that a startup has when it scales. It’s all related to hiring good people, financing our growth, as well as the challenge of expanding into countries outside the UK.
What was it like to pitch in the Grand Final?
Very fun, but also difficult based on the 3 minute model.
Where do you see your company in two years’ time?
Financially, achieving an eight figure recurring revenue stream. We will achieve this by continuing to distribute our product around the word, with the end goal of helping people get fit with the latest technology.
