Meet the Northern Stars finalists: Lumici helps drive the online education revolution
7 Oct, 2016On 17th November 2016, our Northern Stars final will take place in Manchester. Among the 20 companies pitching will be six from the regional heats. As the final approaches, we’re highlighting the winners of those events.
Lumici was victorious in Sheffield, so we spoke to founder Atif Mahmood to find out more about the company.
Hello Lumici, what’s your elevator pitch?
A faster, easier and smarter way to deliver lessons online.
What’s it like to be a startup in Manchester?
I used to be based in Derby and there’s no startup scene and support there. Fortunately I got into the Ignite accelerator in Manchester. That helped me build up a network of contacts in the North. People have been really forthcoming and helpful, and I’m always trying to learn something new.
Through Ignite I got to meet people who are specialists in things like growth hacking or marketing, for example. There are lots of people in Manchester willing to help with expertise you don’t have.

What are your plans for the future?
We’ve just closed a £120,000 seed round. That allows us to hire a customer success manager and an inbound sales person. Our aim is to get to 100 customers in 12 months, where each customer is a school or college.
Why did you enter Northern Stars?
I looked at it last year and followed how the companies did. It’s a great platform. There’s lots of hype for startups in London, and it’s good to see that growing in the north. I took part to showcase Lumici and what we’re doing as an ed-tech platform.
What was it like to pitch?
I love pitching Lumici. I’m a former teacher and I personally funded it up to now. I’m proud of how far we’ve got and I love conveying it to the audience. Everyone can relate to a teacher and I enjoyed it, it was really good.
