To help raise awareness of digital entrepreneurship in the North of England, we took 10 of our ‘Northern Stars‘ award-winning startups with us to the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in London on 7-8 December.
These were:
– Airstoc: Founders Andre Ferreira, Giles Moore and Manu Matute.
– EvaluAgent: Director Jonny Branshaw.
– Formisimo: Founders Tom New and Al Mackin.
– Geek Talent: Founder Dominic Murphy.
– Gnatta: CEO Jack Barmby.
– IN-PART: Founder Patrick Speedie and Dr. Robin Knight.
– Leaf.fm: CEO Gilbert Corrales.
– M14 Industries, Bristlr: Founder John Kershaw.
– Peak: Director Richard Potter.
– Receptive: Founders Hannah Chaplin and Dan Dukeson.
Not only was this an excellent opportunity for them to broaden their network of founders, investors and potential customers, it was also a chance for us to promote our 7 major tech cluster cities to a national and international audience.

Having attended many business and tech conferences over the years, I was impressed by how well organised the event was in comparison to others and the quality of the interactions for everyone on the ‘Tech North Pavillion’.

It was also really pleasing to hear just how many people were already aware of Tech North and seemed genuinely excited by the opportunities available to them in the North of England.

It was also lovely to meet up with old friends like IoT pioneer Joanna Montgomery (Little Riot / Pillow Talk) and the guys from HackTrain which we recently sponsored as we love the way they’re bringing tech talent together from across the UK to #HackTheRails.

In my humble opinion, one of the biggest barriers to economic growth in our Northern cities is a lack of positive media exposure and so unless you’ve spent time living or working there, you won’t realise what amazingly supportive digital communities they have.
There are already many successful tech businesses throughout the North East, North West and Yorkshire and so a big part of our mission is to make sure the rest of the country and indeed the world gets to hear about them (thank you Suzy @ BQLive)!

We’re also working hard to encourage greater collaboration between all our Northern cities and with London (as well as on an international scale in places like Berlin, Tallinn and New York) as the best skills, expertise and resources are rarely all concentrated in the same geographical area.
