Dynamix Live brings the inside out at a Gateshead skatepark

8 Mar, 2017

Dynamix Skatepark in Gateshead had a problem – there was lots happening inside but people passing by simply didn’t know. From the outside, it just looked like a boring building in an industrial part of town.

So, why not bring the inside out? That’s the idea of Dynamix Live.

The concept:

“High-definition live and recorded footage of skateboarders, BMX riders, scooterers, wall-trampolinists, motocross riders and aerial circus artists, captured by action cameras and mobile phone, is edited live by a VJ into a stylised single stream video and projected in real time and large scale onto the building – thereby revealing the usually hidden activities happening inside and behind the 40 000sqft warehouse, and transforming them into a cinematic experience for the audience.”

In short, it’s a multimedia, technology-powered skating spectacular, projected live onto the outside of the building.

Dynamix Live is the brainchild of digital media artist Lalya Gaye, who is also on the skatepark’s advisory board. Last year, it debuted as a one off event, supported by Tech North. Now it’s back for three events over three months.

Events like this are important because they show how interesting uses of technology can bring local communities closer together. Gaye says skate park regulars, sporty types and digital arts enthusiasts all attended February’s event.

Gaye is keen to point out that the event is free to attend, and you can skate for free, too. The next two Dynamix Live events are on 26th March and 23rd April 2017. You can find more information here.
